Serials Review Project at Mann Library

July 2006

Dear Members of the Mann Library Community,

Mann Library is continuing our serials review, and we would appreciate your help. This website lists the titles that are under consideration for this year. It includes a number of titles we plan to move to e-only, as well as candidates for outright cancellation. The different groups of titles are labeled on the list on the website. In past years, we reviewed journal subscriptions from a number of publishers, including Elsevier, Springer, Oxford University Press and others; this year, we are reviewing titles from additional publishers including Karger, Brill, Sage and Taylor & Francis. We have reviewed data we receive from the publishers showing online usage, and we have analyzed where Cornell authors are publishing and which journals they are citing. This analysis provides us with a list of possible candidates for cancellation, but we need your input before we make any final decisions. Sometimes low usage means a journal is not important, but sometimes low usage simply means it is an important journal with a small, but critical audience.

We were very pleased to receive a 3% increase in our acquisition budget this year, but we are still finding that serial price increases at 6-8% are outpacing our budget increases. By cancelling under-utilized titles, we can free up funds to buy new journals, which continue to appear on a regular basis. Please review the 2007 cancellation list. If you have concerns about specific titles on the list, please complete the online comment form to let us know by August 15. We appreciate your feedback and your ongoing support for Mann Library.

Sincerely,
