Specialized Computing Workstations

There are several specialized workstations at Mann Library that you can use. Below are brief descriptions. If you need any help with these, please ask at the Reference Desk or the Computer Operators' Desk. To see a map showing where these stations are located, click here.

Assistive Technology Station
Do library research with assistive aids for viewing, hearing, scanning, Brailling and printing. Features include:

  • JAWS (screen reading software)
  • Kurzweil (Braille translation software)
  • MAGic (screen magnification software)
  • Dragon Naturally Speaking (screen reading and voice-to-text software)
  • Duxbury (Braille translation software)
  • Romeo Brailler (embosser for Braille documents)

Microfilm/Microfiche Scanning Station:

Make digital scans of microfilm and/or microfiche, for viewing, printing and saving.

Business Computing Cluster:

  • Bloomberg Station: Bloomberg is an online financial service providing quotes and technical analysis of U.S. and international securities. It also provides: company news industry news market news historical economic data from the IMF
  • CEIC Data: dedicated Windows XP workstation for research using CEIC Data in Microsoft Excel.
  • LehmanLive: dedicated Windows XP workstation for LehmanLive business research.

AV Production Room (Room 261)
Film and/or edit video and audio and create DVD's. Features include:

  • Two Mac Pro creation stations with dual monitors (software installed listed on the Mann software table);
  • Firewire-equipped audio mixing board;
  • Microphones and headsets;
  • MiniDV tape deck for transferring footage from tape to digital file format (see SONY GV-HD700 user manual and our transfer quick guide for more info).
  • Video cameras and tripods can be charged out from the circulation desk on the first floor. Check availability of cameras and reserve from the main equipment page.

Non-computer equipment:

VHS-to-DVD-R converter

A Panasonic DMRES45V VHS to DVD deck is available in the Stone Computing area on the first floor. It is attached to a Sharp flat panel LCD television for viewing. Basic instructions for transferring footage to DVD are posted next to the unit. A detailed manual is available here.

TV/VCR combo and worldwide-format VCR

A television/VCR combo is available in the Stone Computing area on the first floor. This unit also has an attached Samsung worldwide VCR which can play back a wide variety of international videotape formats including PAL and SECAM.
