Job Title: Student Computer Assistant I

Location: Stone Computing Center, Mann Library

General Description
Under the supervision of Student Supervisors who report directly to the Computing Centers Coordinator, the people in this position support the operation of the Stone Computing Center on the first floor of Mann Library. This position requires excellent customer service, technical, and communication skills and a high level of dependability. The Computer Operator interacts with the Cornell community, Library staff, New York State residents and the general public. The Operator supports the experience of the end user in the Lab, coordinates Lab use to ensure smooth and equitable distribution of computing resources, maintains the appearance of the Lab, and diagnoses/reports equipment problems. During evening and weekend hours, Computer Assistants also provide basic Reference support in cooperation with the Senior Night Supervisor and the Access Services staff. He/she performs a key role in representing Mann Library to the community.

Details

Coordinate lab usage:

  • Help patrons with poster printing
  • Assist or refer users with general usage problems
  • Record usage statistics
  • Distribute manuals and assist with software & hardware on request
  • Enforce University policies governing the use of its computing resources
  • Assist with basic Reference questions evenings & weekends

Maintain and diagnose problems with equipment:

  • Diagnose hardware, software, and network problems with the desktop units
  • Inform the Coordinator of hardware and software problems
  • Log the problems as directed by the Mann Library Administration

Maintain the appearance of the lab:

  • Organize Net-Print Printouts
  • Clean computer screens, classroom whiteboards, mice, etc.
  • Perform regularly scheduled cleaning and maintenance tasks

Other duties as assigned


Requirements:

  • Formal computer background (classes or training) is helpful but not required
  • Competence with PCs, MACs, MSOffice suite, Bear Access & uPortal, Eudora, NetPrint, Digital Cameras, EndNote, Library Catalog, Library Gateway, Library databases, Photoshop and the ability/willingness to learn new software and technology
  • Strong background in public service or demonstrated ability to work in a public service position
  • Full-time student status

Location: Warren Hall B60 and 160

General Description
Under the supervision of the Student Supervisors who report directly to the Computing Centers Coordinator, the people in this position support the operation of the computing labs in Warren B60 and Warren 160. This position requires excellent customer service, technical, and communication skills and a high level of dependability. The Computer Operator interacts primarily with CALS students, faculty and staff, as well as the staff and student workers of Mann Library. The Operator supports faculty, staff and students in the labs, opens and closes the labs according to posted schedules, maintains the appearance of the Lab, and diagnoses/reports equipment problems.
