Mann Library has two Garmin GPS units, the Map76CS and Map76CSx available for 3-day loan to Cornell patrons (see main GPS page for policies). They can be checked-out at the 1st floor Circulation Desk (map it).
Specifications
The 76CS has a 12 channel SiRF II GPS receiver. The 76CSx has a higher sensitivity SiRF III receiver (better reception in heavy vegetation, deep canyons and urban areas) and a microSD card slot for up to 2 GB of data storage. Both are water resistant and have:
- WAAS-capable receivers
- 160 x 240 pixel, 256-color display*
- Built-in quad-helix antenna
- Electronic compass
- Barometric sensor
- Elevation computer
- USB connectivity
- Position formats include Lat/Lon, UTM, Loran TDs, and more
- Trip computer (odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed, more)
*Please note: While both units offer a "moving map" color display for viewing information like location, bearing, and elevation, they are provided with only minimal Garmin "base layer" maps, and are not suitable as navigation devices as is. Their primary purpose for our patrons is to record data points for research purposes. New York State base maps from http://www.ibycus.com/ibycususa/, with somewhat greater detail based on Census Tiger 2007 data are provided.
Policies and Procedures
- Garmin units are circulated with one set of fully recharged batteries. This should be sufficient for most users, but if you're planning to use the unit heavily, you may want to consider bringing an extra set of disposable batteries as a back up. Changing from rechargeable to disposable batteries requires changing the GPS unit configuration; see the quick guide for instructions.
- Library staff will erase all data after each use, but see the quick guide for information if you wish to erase data yourself.
- DNR Garmin (recommended) or Garmin's MapSource software is required to download data from the GPS. Both are installed on the Mann Library "Classroom" computers. A USB cable for connecting the GPS unit to a computer comes with the unit. See the quick guide for instructions on how to download data. Do not attempt to download data without one of these software packages.
