GIS Instruction

Learning GIS

Mann Library offers introductory workshops and tutorials for both ArcGIS and Manifold software. The workshop tutorials are also available below. For in-depth instruction, consider taking one of Cornell's full-semester courses in GIS. For short tutorials covering specific GIS tasks, see the new GIS Help and Tutorials site.

ArcGIS

Faculty interested in course-related GIS Instruction should contact Keith Jenkins.

The Stone Computing Center Reference Bookcase (map it) contains complete documentation for ArcGIS software, including the book "Getting to Know ArcGIS" (call number G70.212 .G489), which contains many helpful tutorials to help you learn GIS.

ESRI Virtual Campus

Cornell students and staff are eligible to take some ESRI Virtual Campus courses free of charge.

Manifold

A new Manifold workshop at Mann Library was introduced in Spring 2008. The workshop tutorial is available here:

Two sets of video training tutorials, created by Art Lembo (former GIS instructor at Cornell) are available for use on Stone Center classroom computers:

  • An introductory tutorial created for GIS Day, 2004 (requires about 2 hours to complete). To access this tutorial, click "Classroom Files" on the desktop. The tutorial and data are in the directory GIS/Manifold_GISDay2004.
  • A more comprehensive set of thirteen tutorials (requires about two days to complete all of them). To access these tutorials, click "Classroom Files" on the desktop. The tutorial and data are in the directory GIS/ManifoldVideos.

Art Lembo and his students put together a document comparing procedures in Manifold and ArcGIS: "How Do I Do This in ArcGIS/Manifold?: Illustrating Classic GIS Tasks".
