Cornell Cooperative Extension Resources

Thousands of information resources are now available to the CCE community via the two information portals at Cornell: the Library Catalog and the Library Gateway. You now have a 24-hour networked access to agricultural, biological, and social sciences resources, as well as many others. These resources include a wide variety of indexes, full-text journal and newspaper articles, statistical and spatial data, etc. Below you will find more information on searching the Catalog and the Gateway.

The Research Tools page also contains links to information resources, including those categorized by subject area. The Instruction page provides information about and links to educational resources.

Library Catalog

The Library Catalog at http://catalog.library.cornell.edu provides access to over 7 million records of the holdings of all the CU libraries on campus, as well as those of the Geneva Experiment Station and the CISER Data Archive. All of Mann's holdings are electronically cataloged.

You would use the catalog if you are trying to determine whether CU Library has a specific item you are interested in or if you would like to find all the items on a topic that CU Library has.

There are many tricks to searching the catalog effectively that are explained in the Catalog Quick Guide and more extensively in the Catalog Help pages. The most important thing to remember is that the Catalog does not let you immediately search within a database or within an electronic journal; neither does it provide access to the contents of print journals. If you are trying to search for journal articles on a topic remotely, you first need to find an electronic index or database, which is sometimes easier through the Find it! portion of the Gateway. Please note that if you have a citation to a journal article (i.e. information about the author and title of the article, the journal title, volume, issue, date, and page numbers), you cannot search for the article by its author's name or title in the Catalog, but should be searching for the journal title instead.

Library Gateway

The Library Gateway at http://www.library.cornell.edu/ is the CU Library home page that provides access to the Catalog, Find it!, Find eJournals, individual library sites, and many additional services. The portion of the Gateway that you will most likely need in your research is Find it!.

Find it!

Contains hundreds of online periodical indexes (e.g. Biosis, Agricola, Human Nutrition, ERIC), online catalogs, reference sources (directories, dictionaries, encyclopedias), image databases, as well as statistical resources (the USDA Economics and Statistics System, the Census of Population, the Census of Agriculture). Even though all of these are also accessible through the Catalog, Find it! is designed to offer easier access to and simultaneous searching within a smaller subset of online resources.

Find e-Journals

Provides access to the electronic journals that CUL licenses. Electronic journals are also available through the Catalog (Basic Search, Journal Title).
