GIS Day 2005

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) Day is an annual, international event that showcases real world applications for this powerful technology. In 2005, GIS Day was celebrated on Wednesday, November 16. Mann, Olin, and Uris Libraries hosted GIS Day events:

  • Michelle Thompson (City and Regional Planning) and Bob Kibbee (Olin Library Map and Geospatial Information Collection) presented a workshop on Accessing and Preparing Data for GIS in the Uris Library electronic classroom.
  • Mann Library hosted a poster and demonstration session, which featured nineteen different projects. Participants included GIS practitioners from several Cornell departments and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology,as well as the City of Ithaca, and the private sector.
  • A drawing was held for prizes donated by ESRI, Manifold, the Cornell Campus Store (A copy of The Adirondack Atlas), and the Cornell University Library (a Global Positioning System).
  • Andy Keal of the Wildlife Conservation Society gave the keynote presentation at Mann Library. His talk was entitled “The Making of the Adirondack Atlas.”
  • Bob Kibbee created an exhibit, "GIS at work: Student, faculty and staff projects using geospatial information” to showcase some of the GIS projects done here at Cornell. The exhibit is located outside the Map and Geospatial Information Collection (Olin lower level) and will continue through December 4.
